If you are a regular visitor, you know that for the last eighteen months Barry and I have been working on the third edition of Beneath the Lily Banners. I know that seems like forever, but again regular visitors will know we both have stupid busy jobs. Work simply proceeds at a pace we need to manage around other things. Producing a book is a huge undertaking, especially with a team of two and especially when we take great pains to make sure we get it right.
The time was not wasted. This book is unique in our working relationship in that we actually had the chance to sit down at the same table, kick ideas around, and even roll some dice. In fact we got to do it twice - once for a long weekend at Historicon 2016 and earlier this year for ten days at Hilton HQ in Glasgow (and traipsing across Ireland with Toggy Bob as well). There was very little bloodshed.
Also during this time, numerous games have been played (many chronicled here) with the new rules and adjustments have been made to repair anything that didn't work the way we intended. Many playtesters provided input as well and we think this is the best version of the rules so far.
Of course, there are also hundreds of stunning new photos featuring models from the collections of a score of talented folks and more artwork than any of our previous books. I spent a lot of time tweaking the overall design trying to come up with something a little different while not straying too far away from what a historical wargame should look like.
I'm very proud of the work we've done and I'm excited to get this into people's hands. The new book will be 180-pages long and be our first hardcover edition.
We'll offer more previews over the coming weeks and get more into the meat of what to expect from The War of Three Kings.
