BLB Scenario: Winter 1706 GNW in Poland

August the Strong's Saxon Army prepares to attack the enemy
Gunter Heim impressed us so much with his Saxon Army on his last visit to the UK that I just had to incorporate them into this year's schedule. We wanted to get the Swedes out again too as they are so different to game with. The final element to the game was my desire to put on a winter table and see how that looked.

Bloody Aughrim July 12, 1691 - refought by the LoA Part 12 The Butcher's bill: Williamite Army

The Williamite Army became very disorganized during the fighting. Many units fled the field without having seen action. Some brigades saw heavy fighting whilst others suffered few or no casualties what soever.

Another close combat for Kilmallock's

Starting on the army's right flank

Leveson's Regiment of Dragoons: Casualties zero. Holding position east of the Melehan stream.

BLB Scenario - Battle of the Boyne 1st July 1690. Crossing at Oldbridge

King William's infantry are ready to get their feet wet
It's one of those battles that people have heard of, even those with no interest in history. Like Waterloo, The Charge of the Light Brigade and The Somme, the Battle of the Boyne has crept into the British collective subconscious and lives in dark corners of hazy misinterpretation. "Isn't that where King Billy killed the Pope?" is an...

Bloody Aughrim July 12, 1691 - refought by the LoA Part 11 The Butcher's bill: Jacobite Army

Editior: This was scheduled for last week, but somehow didn't post - I have been out of it for a few weeks and didn't notice! My apologies...

The grim statistics from the re-fight are quite revealing. Bare in mind that in the BLB system of casualties a unit loses are not meant to represent simply men killed in action but men wounded, deserters and a reduction in overall unit fighting effectiveness....

Donnybrook Scenario: Revenge of the Huguenots 1683, Southern France

The idyll that is south western France.. soon to be shattered
Moving Donnybrook around the various theatres of conflict has been an enjoyable exercise. So far we've had games in Tangier, Massachusetts, Scotland, Ireland, Scania and some dark place in our minds which could have been Hammer Horror land. A trip to the sunny south west of France was a new destination.

Disgruntled Huguenot veterans pour...

Donnybrook Scenario: 1681 Escape from Edinburgh

Pork bellies full of loot... the most valuable pigs in Edinburgh!

This scenario was perhaps born when I was having a dream or under the 'fluence. It seemed logical at the time. It is loosely based on a historical incident, that being, the imprisonment of the 9th Earl of Argyll, Archibald Campbell in Edinburgh Castle in 1681. A reluctant signatory to a document recognizing the Divine right of Kings...

Bloody Aughrim July 12, 1691 - refought by the LoA Part 10 - Battle Report coffee and mints

Aughrim Village from the Causeway:copyright BHilton.
Now it is all over it is worth reflecting on the differences between our result and that of history. Well, firstly,
the Jacobites were victorious by holding their line and completely repulsing the enemy! This would have meant in historical terms possibly -

1. The continuation of the war for at least another year.
2. The replacement of Ginkel as...

Tales from Sverige Part 2 - Donnybrook in the Stockholm suburbs

Donnybrook in Stockholm! The teams assembled.
Barry Hilton - I very much enjoyed my evening in the company of Soren, Michael and the gang. They have a nice set up in a 'club basement' in the suburbs of the city. Having visited the Army Museum with the guys in the afternoon I headed out with Soren for a Donnybrook game set up by Michael in the evening.

What a gorgeous table.. the work of Michael Leck

Wargaming in the Debatable Lands... Or, a visit to Dumfries!

Saxon Cuirassiers await the order to advance
A visit to Dumfries is something I would recommend you try and accomplish if the chance presents itself. The approach from North or South takes you through some stunning country. My trips have had the additional bonus of meeting old friends and participating in some wargaming. The locals are very friendly and full of colourful tales not for the faint...

Russian Guard Flags from Quindia Studios

Clarence Harrison - Another addition to our GNW range...

Preobrazhenski and Semenovski regiments, available now from the LoA shop! It's been mentioned before, but you can get all of our flags at glorious LoA scale (50mm high), a quiet confident Quindia Studios scale (40mm high), and a boring 'realistic' scale (30mm high)... If you need something else drop us a note and we will see if we can work...

Bloody Aughrim July 12, 1691 - refought by the LoA Part 9 - Battle Report dessert

Reconvening about a further three weeks down the line...Barry concludes the battle report  on the epic struggle at Aughrim.

Judging by his top you couldn't tell Gerry was Ginkel!! The start of Part 3.
For all you marathon runners out there; To recap, 10 x 6 feet table, about 1,600 miniatures and so far about 13 hours of gaming. Four players come together for the third time to try and resolve the...

GNW Swedish Infantry Preview

Clibinarium - It may have seemed for quite some time now that all has been quiet on the Warfare Miniatures front, without news of new releases or development. But things have been progressing steadily under the radar on the first part of our new venture into the Great Northern War; the army of Charles XII.

Over the Christmas period a lot of work went into the preparation of doll figures, indeed I...
