Solidifying the Ghost Army Part 5 - How far can you get in a week?

A selection of the Ghost Army in the field

Something I am frequently asked is "how do you manage to be so productive?". The answer is quite simple. I don't have any spare time.

Lukas Strom takes an aimed shot

My day job keeps me away from home about 180 days per year on average. I long ago abandoned my portable painting kit which included about two dozen little Vallejo bottles carried around with my...

Solidifying the Ghost Army 4 - Weathering the Veterans

Three steps: Painted, Washed down, Weathered - bases unfinished

The look I wanted to get with these models was a faded, dirty, washed out effect. They have been in the field for over two years without proper resupply from home. If a parade ground look ever existed in the early 18th century which I doubt, these chaps are as far away from that as is possible. For those interested, a tip I would offer...

Solidifying the Ghost Army Part 3 Åke Öberg’s Vikingar

Åke Öberg’s Vikingar - the raw material - two conversions and three 're-equipped' models
The finished unit -Åke Öberg’s Vikingar

The unit is Veteran under Donnybrook classification and equipped with heavy weapons, in this case battle axes. They are known in my collection as Sergeant Åke Öberg’s Vikingar. His little command are formidable men from the northern provinces of Sweden. Almost inured to...

Solidifying the Ghost Army Part 1 - The BIG idea

A preview of four of the conversions for the Ghost Army

On a recent flight back from New York I hit the creative wall. I intended to use the journey to write something new but found myself simply staring at the screen.. it had been a hard week at the office.
I resorted to trawling through my files of previously written pieces and eventually I came across an almost finished scenario for Donnybrook...

Battle for Britain 1693.. campaigning opening shots

The 1693 campaign season opened with three contrasting scenarios reflecting the differing challenges facing each of the commanders depending on where they found themselves at the close of 1692.

Kilbryde 1693 - site of the conventicle (assembling around the house)

In Scotland Viscount Dundee found himself nominally in control of the country but with far too few troops to effectively ensure the King's...

Pike less in Falkirk .. LoA at Carronade 2017

The LoA GNW game at Falkirk 2017

I cannot say the our preparation for the Carronade show in Falkirk was faultless. I spent about 90 minutes the night before the show looking out all the various components from the game we had run at Tactica. Terrain - check, buildings - check, troops - check (sure about that?... yep), trees - text to Toggy - check, rules - check, handout - oops I forgot that, never...

1693 Start of the campaign season

On the march once again.. The Army of William III
1693opens with many of the main characters elsewhere... Marlborough held at Versailles, Tollemache garrisoning a small frontier fortress in the low countries, Berwick sent on a diplomatic errand to the Vatican via Vienna and St Petersburg, Sarsfield back in Ireland raising and training a new army and Wauchope mad and incoherent in an unnamed...

Campaign hard facts

For all you 'Stato' types out there (and in my experience that is most gamers), I have included the casualties from the main battles in the 1692 campaign season here. It will be followed by the Roll of Honour/Dishonour in a subsequent post.

As many of these units have gained experience and have featured in the 1693 campaign the information does have some gaming relevance.

Some of the players have I...

Unashamed Williamite Wars LoA nostalgia trip..

Glorying in the spectacle of the game...

I have hundreds, perhaps thousands of gaming images from our many years of gaming the Williamite Wars. Sometimes it is nice just to look and not necessarily to read. Not in chronological order (of the war nor of when they were played), here is a trip through the images if you need some inspiration...

Infamy! The English Life Guards treacherously turn on the Gardes te Voet

The guile of the Lord Lucan in persuading the venal Kirke combined with the grit of the brave Irish soldiers to serve up a delicious victory in the cause of the true King and the true religion– This is the tale King James’s counsellors would have us swallow...

The Jacobite Army on the left delivered a stunning victory at Badon Hill

The ire of the populace at large has turned like a rabid dog upon prominent men who once had the world at their feet. General Tollemache, erstwhile darling of the army and hero of the battlefield is now become a figure of derision and the corporeal...

Complicit in the Jacobite defeat? St Ruhe's French may have fought hard enough

Dundee’s own losses amounted to no greater than thirteen hundreds of the total four and one half thousands lost for King James. So, can it truly be believed that the legions of King Louis the Magnificent did not shoulder more than adequate share of the...
