King James' Royal Guard Regiment WiP

Clarence Harrison - Work in progress...

I have a long weekend thanks to the holiday and I am really hoping to finish this unit over the next few days...

Beneath the Lily Banners, CRISIS and the Alde Garde - a winning combo!

The French pursue their foes
Panorama of the Alde Garde table
Peter Lenders and his Dutch gaming group are regulars at CRISIS in Antwerp. On at least two occasions I have seen them put on a fine BLB game. This year's effort was grand in scale and excellent in quality.

Historicon 2016

Clarence Harrison - Well, it is all but set in stone that Barry and I will be attending Historicon 2016. Vacation time has been scheduled, travel options are being considered, and plans are underway for a participation game of Beneath the Lily Banners that we will run at least once a day (and maybe twice depending on what else we get up to).

The theme for Historicon 2016is 'Cavalry - Mounted...

GNW Swedish battalion packs now available

Well, I have finally got round to sorting out all the bags of Swedes lying around my house to create six different battalion packs.

I have gone for the original scope of the range with Standing. Marching and Attacking battalions available in both tricorne and karpus.

Until the end of November 2015 you can get two free Swedish infantry flags of your choice with the battalion. Just send me an email at...

Jim Purky moves on to Swedish cavalry

nice shot of the charge

Moving on from Jim's previous post featuring a fine unit of Swedish GNW infantry here are some shots of a unit of cavalry and very fine they are!
The deep bases create some wonderful movement

Jim has opted for the deep basing I myself prefer which permits a nice arrangement of the horse relative to each other. He has contrasted the traditional blue and yellow colour combo with...

Building a Wargames Army, Part 7 - Earl of Clanrickarde's Foot

Clarence Harrison - It's been a long time since I've been able to participate here (or in wargaming in general). I'm not ready yet to commit to regular posts, but I did manage to finish this unit today (I started it around January 2015)...

As I mentioned when I put forth my earlier plan for the army, Clanrickarde's foot seem to have nearly a third of their number armed with pikes. That ratio goes...

1690s ARTILLERY ACTION!

English battery at Walcourt 1689
The interruption to posts on the blog has been the direct consequence of a six day trip which began with SALUTE 2015 and ended when I returned from the battlefields of Belgium on Friday night. After the show Bob, Gerry and I headed off to the Cockpit of Europe for a fairly intensive four day driving and walking tour.

1690s INFANTRY ACTION!

Swedish infantry of a slightly earlier vintage 1675 - Scanian War
To restore some balance I have selected a series of 1690s based infantry action photos which I trust also hit the mark.
Ramsay's Scots Dutch Regiment at Neerwinden 1693
For some reason gamers tend to always begin their collections in a new period with infantry. Is that to get a feel for the painting style or because their are quicker...

1690s CAVALRY ACTION!

Jacobite counterattack at Aughrim 1691
French and Irish Horse clash with Huguenot and Dutch - Partizan 2013
I take lots of pictures during our games and often forget I even have them! The intention is  to build an extensive archive to support articles and publications but this is easy to lose track of.

BLB & Warfare Miniatures at Seven Years War Con, South Bend , IN

Dannie walks us through BLB and WARFARE MINIATURES debut at SYWARCON, IN. Nice pix too!

The Seven Years War Convention has been held for the past 32 years in South Bend, Indiana.  Despite its name, it is really dedicated to the period 1700 to 1783, or the "Tricorne" period.  This year there were about 100 attendees.  The main events were on Friday and Saturday.

This year we decided to run a couple...

Williamite Army 1691 in 15mm

Peter Allport takes us through his creation of the forces of King Willam III:

My Anglo- Dutch army

1st English Life Guards, Colchester’s horse and the Dutch Van Graben in front line

Inspired by the ‘soft’ Irish climate which produces green fields and damp days, I have created the Anglo- Dutch army trying to gain control of this ‘accursed’ land… here they are outside the gates of Athlone.

Building a Wargames Army, Part 6 - Lord Dongan's Dragoons

Clarence Harrison - Here's my second regiment of dismounted dragoons...

I realized while cleaning up that one of the little buggers is camera shy. There are actually ten models in this unit! Later this year Warfare will release mounted dragoons and horse holder sets and I will revisit both of my dragoon units to add mounted versions. I think I am going to mount them individually as well and just...
