Hilton's revenge! New Pirate flags!
I am sure you have heard of Blackbeard's ship, Queen Anne's Revenge. When we started with Donnybrook a few years back Mr. Harrison, of this parish, got me all fired up to the extent that I painted and based the thick end of 200 miniatures which feature liberally in Donnybrook. He, on the other hand, painted... none!
Old score's are best settled cold. So this is Hilton's Revenge! I have worked on...
First of 2021 and, a new era
My end of year game this year was novel for a two main reasons. Firstly, it was out of period - An English Civil War era, full scale naval battle. Secondly, my battle report is not being delivered in the traditional way.
I have chosen to create a 15 minute video battle report. It has taken quite some time to create but I am trying to set myself a new level of aspiration. I wanted it to be as...
Eternally glass half full....
Few of us have lived through a year like 2020 before. It has impacted on us all in some way whether health, work, family, plans, projects or dreams. I and mine have been very lucky so far.
Being grounded for ten months has been a golden opportunity. Not only have I got to sleep in my own bed every night, see my wife and daughter every day for the first time in nearly twenty years and cut my travel...
Full Mad for War teaser video uploaded
Launching LoA on YouTube
I have started my long promised commitment to video content. I made a short introductory video to Mad for War which I have uploaded to YouTube on a League of Augsburg channel. My hope is that both Clarence and I will use this channel to support Donnybrook, Beneath the Lily Banners, Republic to Empire, Victory without quarter and Mad for War.
I have a few instructional videos to upload over the...
Sharks, blast furnaces and me
Apparently sharks die if they stop swimming. I don't know if that is true but it is an interesting thought. As a trained metallurgist, I do know that if you let a blast furnace cool down too much, it is 'gubbed'. And then I realized that I need to find the next project or.....
Of course, Clarence and I are well advanced with Mad for War, but the 4Play scenarios combined with the proof of concept...
The irrepressible Henry Hyde....Battlechat 64
I don't know how long these are supposed to last but Henry and I were talking for almost two hours today (the shortest daylight day of the year... and my longest conversation of the day). We were recording Battlechat #64 and Henry reminded me that the last time I was on his show was #32 so, a nice bit of symmetry there.
We also talked about whether I would have to wait till #96 to do it again! I...
Latest 4Play scenario releases
I have been working on these behind the scenes to get them ready for release before Christmas. The first is the missing #18. As many blog members are collecting the series, a few of the sharp eyed had noticed that this number was missing from the sequence and had asked about it.
I had partially finished it during the last release but held it over to make a few tweaks. Here it is at last. The first...

This has been a productive year. Helion have released Every bullet has its billet exactly on time. Congratulations to Charles and his team for delivering the goods on time and to the right quality.

Launching.... Donnybrook at Sea! - Now available
Donnybrook at Sea has an extensive ship type reference section |
Donnybrook at Sea - a Q & A summary
Why?
My lifelong interest in naval wargaming has only recently been allowed to flourish. The research needed to complete a comprehensive set of rules for the period 1630-1720 made it clear that the vast majority of naval action involved a handful of small ships. The mega sea battles of which there were many, are the mere tip of an enormous berg. By ignoring the small ship action anyone interested...
Normal service is being resumed at Warfare Miniatures
I am glad to say that although it has actually taken a year, normal service is being resumed in terms of figure availability.
For those who have been missing codes from the range for a while - a look today will evidence that the bulk of the cavalry has now reappeared.
I also hope to make the Cossacks available within the next 7-10 days too.
More of an explanation of how things will change going...
