Warfare Miniatures will not be trading at Partizan on August 18th 2019 but I will have a League of Augusburg game on at the show. Not surprisingly, Great Northern War themed.

Tocht naar Chatham 1667 - The 28mm bit begins

The first unit of Dutch Marines - uniform colours from colonial naval infantry of the same period.

Having co written Donnybrook and produced an as yet unpublished extension for Beneath the Lily Banners dealing with small unit actions it was always the plan to deal with some of the 1667 Medway fighting in 28mm.

Other units will have different flags

There appears to be no concensus regarding the long...

New Danish grenadiers and painted firing line

These fine chaps have been available for almost a year but I never got round to putting them in the shop! My fault completely. I had it in my mind to paint them first but that deadline slipped away again and again.

Anyway, we have sold a few dozen packs on request over the time period but I apologize for keeping them from you for so long.

The Danes retained grenadier companies of significant size...

Blood & Cutts Part 3

The final part of a piece on one of the country's forgotten Lions...

An appraisal of England’s fire eating general

Cutts probably did not get into the heat of battle at Blenheim but his commanded a large body of the army.

Cutts on the table top

In a skirmish game John Cutts would be a fearless leader with a nose for danger. Fond of impetuous charges, close combat and impossible odds. A character who...

The War Wagon

The finished War wagon in profile

The original wagon from which the war wagon is constructed. All that was used was the flat bed and wheels.

I had this idea in my head to build a centre piece for the Ottoman wagonburg. I wanted a something practical but distinctive and I gained a lot of valuable experience arsing around with the twelve defensive pieces built for the wagonburg circumference.

The...

Battle of the Skull Mound - Part 3: Reflections

I promised a look back at the performance of both the Ottoman based infantry force and the Cossack Force which was used in the Skull Mound game.

Let's deal with the Ottomans first. We beefed up the quality of the this force in order to achieve a points match with the enemy. This resulted in two Guard quality units - something that rarely if ever happens in the Western theatre but these ratings are...

A wee taster.. With Talon and Claw.. news

Neil Roberts outstanding cover with some of Clarence's internal illos

The new Great Northern War supplement for Beneath the Lily Banners 3rd edition is called

With Talon and Claw

The reason? Eagles and lions with their talons and claws appear in almost all of the arms of the combatant nations of the Great Northern and Eastern Wars - Swedes, Danes, Saxons, Prussians, Poles, Imperialists and...

Let's make a wagon fort

Well, it was a thought that had been floating around my head for a while. I had some vague ideas about how I might scratch build a defend-able 'wagon barrier' but had never gone practical with it.

No time like the present - about a month or so till Partizan so nothing like a little pressure to focus the mind.

How many? (it was a question to self).. four? six?... how about twelve? OK. That's settled,...

Battle of Skull Mound Part 2 - Battle report photos

The Ottoman attack on Skull Mound builds cautiously but steadily.

With very little cavalry available the Ottomans were relying on firepower in this battle. We upgraded the Janissary units to Veteran with two small units rated with the rare Guard level and all ortas with flintlock muskets. The three field guns forming a baseline would hopefully provide plenty of support fire. 152 infantry, 18...

Battle of the Skull Mound 1677: The Scenario

1677.....

The Ottoman Empire, allied with Crimean Tatars is pushing north on the west bank of the great Dnieper river into the Ukranian territories. The first line of defence is offered by Cossacks on both sides of the river.

A strong Turkish force composed mainly of infantry has been given the objective of capturing a small Cossack settlement near an ancient Patzinak burial site known locally as...
