Quindia Studios GNW Flags and Warfare Miniatures on the table

The trophy captured by the Russians from Ostergotland

Barry Hilton- Finally, after four weeks on the road I got home and had a chance to finish something which I simply ran out of road to achieve in mid November. Having crossed oodles of stuff off my 'to do' list, cut out the flags and charged up my camera I was foiled at the last minute by finding out the Prit Stick my wife had bought to complete...

A Swedish Wedgie! Warfare Miniatures Pre-production GNW Swedish Cavalry

A while back we cast up some test Swedish cavalry which have been seen on the show circuit but only as samples on the Warfare Miniatures stand. The reaction to the models was very good.

When I decided to include a piece of GNW action in our October Derby Weekender I did a freshen up of my existing Swedish Army and decided to complete the half squadron of Warfare Swedes and give them a 'run out'...

WARFARE MINIATURES GNW RANGE DEVELOPMENT - SIZE COMPARISON

A short post in response to the inevitable questions now arising about range compatibility between Warfare Miniatures new Great Northern War figures and existing offerings in the market. I took this quick shot to illustrate...
Warfare Miniatures figure on the left. In the centre is a Musketeer Miniatures drummer and on the right a FoundrySwedish grenadier. Musketeer are the tallest and in terms of...

WARFARE MINIATURES GNW DEVELOPMENTS - ALL TOGETHER NOW

Here are all of the test sculpts brought together in a colourful montage of what is to come. This experimental phase was undertaken to give us a feel for the best way to go forward.

From this group of Swedes three body dollies have been selected to form the basis of infantry codes. These dollies will be supplemented by a further five to create the anatomical core of the Swedish rank and file. The...

WARFARE MINIATURES GNW DEVELOPMENTS - Russians Part 2

Barry Hilton - This part of the series details less conventional(from a wargames manufacturing perspective) Russian troop types from the Great Northern War. First up is in my opinion the most spectacular sculpt of the 10 protos.

#4 RUSSIAN OFFICER in kaftan
The uniform is very ornate and the colours I have chosen are very dramatic with high contrast not just in the colour tones but against each...

WARFARE MINIATURES GNW DEVELOPMENTS - Russians Part 1

Barry Hilton - I painted the five Swedish figures first as my wargaming leanings are towards the Swedes. I enjoyed that very much but realized that as I got into doing the 5 Russian models in two sittings that I was enjoying them even more!

The poses are interesting and the uniforms are quite different to those of their opponents. Clibinarium had pretty much free rein to sculpt what he wanted in...

WARFARE MINIATURES GNW DEVELOPMENTS - Swedes Part 2

Barry Hilton - This post details two other preliminary Swedish sculpts for the GNW project. This is a privately funded range which will be comprehensive and less conventional than the norm. The 5 Swedish sculpts featured on this post and part 1 were preliminary works which will become commercially available.

Warfare customers who order in the run up to Christmas may find some have crept into their...

One man's story.. Building the Saxon Army for the Great Northern War Part 3

Holding back the blue waves at Klissow

Günter Heim - What Clarence achieved within a few weeks of labour on the Saxon flags stunned me and can now be seen in the Shop now. With his help and by his requests for further information we discovered certain details which I missed in my research.

So, after the figures and flags have been in the process of being painted and created I could now focus on...

WARFARE MINIATURES GNW DEVELOPMENTS - Swedes Part 1

Barry Hilton - I was itching to paint these chaps from the minute I saw the sculpts but of course that would have been plain stupid! I received the master cast batches in Antwerp but for various business reasons was unable to get to my painting table until yesterday. I prepped up all 10 and finished 5 - The Swedes.

A walk through each sculpt with some commentary will I think be useful to those...

One man's story.. Building the Saxon Army for the Great Northern War Part 2

Hordes of Saxon Kürassier at Klissow 1702
Günter Heim - The next step in building forces for Beneath the Lily Banners for me was to decide which miniatures I was going to use... It was about this time that Barry Hilton started his own range by introducing the famous Warfare Miniatures! I was almost immediately taken by their look and started to compare the miniatures with the drawings in Dan's...

One man's story.. Building the Saxon Army for the Great Northern War Part 1

Herr Heim's GNW Saxons in all their glory

Günter Heim - First, there was nothing... no, that is not correct! There was already the thought it should be a country which no one has modelled so far.

The Pre-History:

I am by birth a half Austrian-half Saxon. My mother’s parents are from Bohemia and my father was born in Dresden, Saxony. In the early days of my...

Pre or Early GNW Swedes Warfare Miniatures

Barry Hilton - I'm into BLUE these days. Not hugely layered and highlighted shades of blue but dense, flat, slap you in the mush sort of BLUE. It is a technique I have seen used before by people in the hobby I respect very much such as Dave Andrews. Make the primary uniform colour of the model flat and dense. Contrast everything else against that mass. I think the effect is very pleasing.

With the...
