The League of Augsburg
The War of Three Kings - "So what took you so long?"
If you are a regular visitor, you know that for the last eighteen months Barry and I have been working on the third edition of Beneath the Lily Banners. I know that seems like forever, but again regular visitors will know we both have stupid busy jobs. Work simply proceeds at a pace we need to manage around other things. Producing a book is a huge undertaking, especially with a team of two and...
Feature- Russian Commanders

Shermetev, Menshikov, Repnin |
From existing paintings it is difficult to definitively decide exactly how a particular historical figure looked. Statuesque and heroic or pox faced and pot bellied? Hardly the latter considering the sitter usually commissioned the artwork and nobody wants to look ugly in a 17th or 18th century version of the modern pouting selfie!
We chose three colourful characters...
Warfare Christmas Cracker 2017
Oh, Oh! (or is that Ho Ho?) It's that dodgy bloke from the mall again.. |
So what do we have in store (literally) for Christmas.
Well there is the £100.00 GNW Brigade
It contains: 4 x 20 model battalions + 1 mounted Commander + 1 light gun with crew.

Each battalion contains 10 musketeers + 5 pikemen + 5 Command models |

Gun crews will be a random choice from the 3 different sets SA1, SA2 and SA3 |

Lots of Dragoons

Painted as Hanoverian Dragoons - WLOA58 and WLOA60 |
I have been slow off the mark painting and basing my dragoons but the new codes have sold very well so far despite having no oxygen of publicity.

Painted as Enniskillen Dragoons 1689-1692 WLOA58 & WLOA60 |
So, time to give them a little ventilation and let everyone see how they look in nice units. Painted by myself, Toggy, Rob Goodier and Jim Masson...
Poltava part 2 - the wargame
![]() |
A late 'battle shot' with the Swedes through the redoubt line |
Jon is very experienced at running large games as he owned and managed a wargaming centre on Crete for several years.

The Swedes columns lined up to storm the redoubt line before the battle commenced |
The plan for the one day show in Antwerp was to steer the Battle of Poltava 1709 through its various distinct phases in order to get to the...
League of Augsburg game Crisis 2017
We had decided well in advance that our Crisis game for 2017 would be modest in size but pretty. There was no need to try and take a massive game by car to Antwerp as we already knew that Jon Sutherland would be running his monster Poltava game adjacent to our table. Running another GNW effort would simply have been overkill so we chose Flanders sometime between 1692 and 1695 for our effort.
Anothe...
Poltava Part 1 - taster of an epic
This game was a year in the making and is the result of the hard work of Jon and Diane Sutherland who created it as a commission for a private collector.
I have been intimately involved with the development as all of the figures used are Warfare Miniatures and there are roughly 2,500 plus about 400 horses here! I counted 'em, Jon painted 'em and Diane built the terrain!
The commission was...
New Look for the LoA Blog
The absolute worst bit of script to fail was the search feature. There are hundreds of posts here...
Some artillery vignettes
I have been working on some artillery vignettes recently and have only just gotten round to photographing them for the blog.
Although we do not have specifically French gunners yet I shaved off the single shoulder strap from our RA1 AND RA3 GNW Russian gunners to create a heavy mortar crew for the French army in Flanders.
The base is dressed with various pieces from the siege equipment set including...
A Fascinating detour Part 2 - Brielle
Gateway in Brielle's inner defensive ramparts |
Panel beyond the outer works explaining Brielle's position and history |
The moat between out ramparts and the Molenbolwerk - can you see its cannon? |
Whilst in Den Haag Toggy spotted an article about the fortress town of Brielle and its capture by the Sea Beggars during the Eighty Years War. Do you know anything about this? he asked. Nope was the unhelpful...
At last - painted Russian mounted Dragoons
These are masters. I had none of the new horses to hand but this shows how well they sit on the existing horse types.
I have painted six troopers which come in two different packs of three. They are painted as the Moskovski Dragoons who wore a white uniform faced white.
I also managed to get one of the Horse Grenadier codes painted too. The also look pretty smart.
They were great fun to paint and...
